There are Good and Bad Conseqences.

Consequences, most people think about bad ones instead of good ones. There are both good and bad consequences. Sometimes making a bad choice turns into a good one. Those are few and far between. For the most part, we think that our decisions are the right ones. The bible says that man thinks he is right in his own eyes. Until everything goes south quickly. Then we are in fix it mode and try not to tell anyone about. Unless it is monumental and we can’t get out of it. I am not saying that everything we choose is bad. The good is mixed in there with the bad. Unfortunately there is more bad than good. And you know that this is true.

I am writing this because my mother in law died last Saturday. Her life, as far as I saw was that mixture of good and bad. I have plenty of good memories about her, but the bad memories have influenced her family far greater than the good ones. My wife would go to her aunt for advice and comfort, knowing that she could not or would not talk to her mother about whatever. My mother in law had progressive dementia the last few years of her life. My father in law is a decent man, but he also made good and bad choices. Everyone has. There is no getting out of them, unless God changes the circumstances. Both my father and mother in law are Christians. I have seen them live a life for Jesus. So I know where my mother in law is, in heaven. Her trials and tribulations are over. I am grieving for my mother in law. Not only for her absence, but for our family and the legacy that she left behind.

When we think that we are completely right, that is when we need to look at what we have done in this world. To see whether or not it was right. Or whether we need to change our ways. We need to stop and consider what our decisions have done to our family and in general the world around us. And if we judge rightly with the wisdom of God then we can be satisfied with the decisions we have made. God bless and keep you wherever you go.

What are You willing to risk?

The risk factor in any adventure is indeterminable. There are too many factors that just can not be determined. So, you have to just take a chance on your ability to survive. When I was young, I look at life as a plum to be picked. I didn’t care about the risk I took on my life. I know that I should have been dead several times. There was one time in college, I was going to pick up my girlfriend in other town to bring her back for a New Years eve party. It was about 15 miles away. I was taking the back roads to avoid traffic. There was a 10 mile straight away with no stop signs. But at the end of the road was a T in the road. You had to turn left or right. My dad had a muscle car with a hemi 318hp motor. It could do 0 to 60 in 3 secs. Burned gas like crazy. It was a Plymouth Fury 111. I got on this road and took off. The speedometer register up to 130 mph. I put the pedal to metal and the speedometer needle was bouncing of the peg at 130 mph. I knew the road and was looking for any car that came on to it. I showed down for the stop sign and stopped. I turn left and looked in my rear view mirror. There behind was a State Trooper. I pulled over and I knew I was going to jail and my dad’s car was going to be impounded. I got out of the car and the State Trooper walked up to me. He said, I clocked you doing 80 mph in a 60 mph zone. He said if I put it down, I have to take you to Jail. Then he said, I’ll put down 75 mph in a 60 mph zone. I started thanking him profusely. I could have killed myself and any other person that came onto that road.

It wasn’t until I received the Lord in my heart that I was delivered from that need for speed demon. Now all my risk taking is measure carefully against my real ability to survive, knowing that I have Assurance from God in my life. I’m not crazy about anything, but will put myself at risk when God calls me to move into unknown territory. Now even if I place myself when I could be killed, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I am killed, I will go to heaven. But all time knowing that I am accomplishing God’s will here on earth. What are you willing to risk? God is ready to step in and help you when you call upon His name and believe.

When Time runs out?

What will you do when time runs out? Just like an hour glass, time will run out for everyone. We are given by God a certain about of time. We can do whatever with of lives until time runs out. Then what is going to happen to us? It is a very valid question that everyone must answer. No one can escape answering the question. People put off answering that question until they understand it’s all over for them. Then reality sets in as they see their lives clearly. What they did or did not do in their lives. It is an unsettling dilemma. People have to face that dilemma with uncertainty. Not knowing what is going to happen to them if they don’t settle the issue of their life.

How can we settle the issue or even know what is going to happen? Why do we know about or even be concerned with this issue? There is a hole in our being. To become whole we have to try to fill that hole with something. I have watched people fill that hole with money, power, sex, drugs or anything that they think will fill that hole. The only problem is that hole was designed by God to be filled with only one thing, God Himself.

It is said the people fear death because of this hole and are held in bondage to it. This is when people become slaves to money, power, sex, drugs or anything that they can fill that hole with.

So how do we break free from this bondage and fill that hole in our lives? There is a plan in place for us that is over 6000 years old. It was there at the beginning of time for every human being. God finished the work for us about 2000 years ago. This work was done for us because God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. His only begotten son is Jesus Christ. And all we have to do is to turn to Him and repent of our sins and believe in Him. This will fill that hole in your life and assure you of the life to come when time runs out.

What do you think about?

Today there is a hurricane bearing down on the coast of my state. It is going to hit landfall about 7 o’clock tonight. It has been wobbling back and forth in the Gulf of Mexico for a week. I woke up this morning thinking about it and its ramifications. It’s not a large hurricane like Katrina, but it’s a storm none the less. It’s funny how our lives are made up of what we think about. So, how important is what we think about?

It is true that what we think is what happens to us. If we dwell on a subject long enough, we begin to believe what we think about. It doesn’t make a difference what subject we think about. What matters is if we take it seriously. We all live in the present. We can’t live in the past or future. Or we are not suppose to. The only time that we have to affect anything is now. Do you know how short a span now is? It is a moment in our lives. It comes and goes in a flash. And all these moments equal a lifetime.

So, I ask you again, what do you think about? Is it important enough to occupy your attention? Or do we need to cast it aside and go on with our lives? You see, what we think about will eventually come out of our mouths. Then it will come true in our lives.

Pride goes before the Fall

I am going to tell you a story of great pride and the destruction that followed. The story about the Assyrians is in 2 Kings 18. The Assyrian empire lasted almost 300 years. It was as large of the Persian empire. The Assyrians were brutal people. They conquered everyone around them. If those people did not surrender, they were slaughtered without pity. Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian empire, located in the fertile crescent in the Middle East. This is the same Nineveh in the book of Jonah. About 700BC, Sennacherib was king of Assyria. He began to move south with an army of 200,000 men. Sennacherib destroy almost every city he attacked. No one could stand up to him.

Then he moved against the kingdom of Judah. At this time Hezekiah was king in Jerusalem. Hezekiah knew that he couldn’t defeat the Assyrians. He sued for peace with the Assyrians. Sennacherib sent an army of 185,000 men to lay siege to Jerusalem. The Assyrians cursed God and laughed at Hezekiah. Hezekiah humbled himself before God and prayed. He asked God for deliverance. The next morning no one expected what they saw. The Assyrians were dead to the last man. 185,000 men lay dead on the ground. Sennacherib ran all the way back to Nineveh. He was killed by his sons and Jerusalem was spared by the hand of God. This story is written not only in the bible, but in the Assyrian records as well.

The difference between Hezekiah and Sennacherib was the difference between humbling yourself before God and being prideful, thinking that no one can hurt you. In Micah 6:8, God writes what He requires of man. It says, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

Not only is this a story being prideful, but it shows part of the journey king Hezekiah took on his way home.

The Journey Home

Who are we and what are we doing here on this earth? The age old question that everyone tries to answer. It sometimes takes all of our lives to answer that question. But it’s not the answer that counts, it’s the struggle to answer the question. In other words, it is the journey home that really counts. What is the journey home? What am I talking about when I say the journey? Our lives are made up of choices we make in everyday life. Each of those choices change the direction of our lives. We are not on the same path that we were on yesterday. It is because of our choices. Good or bad, our choices are our own. No one forced us to make those choices. We decided that this way is better than that way and we made a choice. Sometimes we regret the choice we made, but it is our own fault.

The journey is to get us from this place to home as quickly as possible. The shortest distance from point A to point B is a straight line. But our lives never go in a straight line. There are always twists and turns in our lives. So we have to keep walking until we reach home. It takes persistence and courage to keep walking home. In other words, it takes faith, hope and trust to walk home.

And what is that faith, hope and trust in to reach home? That’s a good question. Let’s take a minute and talk about our destination, home. We are not of this world. We were placed on this world to prove a point and to develop ourselves into someone that person who deserves to go home. There are only 2 destinations, heaven or hell. Heaven is our true home and hell was made to hold the devil and his hordes. It is our choice which place we are going to. We have to choose on our walk which place we will end up in.

What is the choice we have to make? That choice is to follow God and Jesus all the way home.

If you want to know more about the walk home, email at the website through the comments.

What is Our Time worth?

What is your time worth? What do you do with the time that you have? Do you just stay busy all the day or is does your life have a purpose? Sometimes we are busy about our life and wake up to see that we are accomplishing nothing. There is nothing wrong with the pursuit of food, clothing and shelter. We need to do these things, but is that all to life? Every so often we have clarity and see more for our lives. But what becomes of those visions and dreams that we see for our lives?

A friend of mine developed a program to direct students to achieve their goals starting in elementary school. By taking classes in their chosen field, they could be half to their goals when they graduated from high school. If they wanted to be in the manual trades, by the time they graduated from high school, they could be working in that field. It is all about focusing on your life’s goals to achieve your reality.

People have achieved these goals even when they are 60 years old. This is where they went back to school and pursued a new career. The joy and satisfaction is in the journey to reach your goals. We truly never reach the end of our dreams here on earth. I am a bible teacher and have been studying for years and still have not reached that point where I know everything. And I won’t until I cross over to the other side of this world. But the journey can be enjoyable and rewarding for us. It is all about the pursuit of our dreams with all of our might. Giving everything to reach our goals. Then our time becomes valuable and we will know our worth.

What Road are You on?

The most famous road in America is the old route 66. Route 66 started in Chicago, Illinois and ended in Santa Monica, California. There were other roads also famous in America. The Oregon trail, which is from Independence, Missouri and ended in Oregon City, Oregon. Then there is the Natchez trace. It started in Virginia with the Cumberland Gap and ran through Nashville, Tennessee until Natchez, Mississippi. The Natchez Trace is still there. It is now a National Parkway. Those are some of the man made roads that became famous in America. Throughout the history of America, people understood how important roads were. It not only provides a convenient way of access from town to town, but a way of commerce for selling goods and services. Some of my ancestors followed Daniel Boone through the Cumberland Gap and settled in Boonesborough, Tennessee.

Roads not only provide a way of access, but the dream of adventure. What do you think Daniel Boone was thinking about when he first crossed the Cumberland mountains into Kentucky and Tennessee? He knew that he was headed in Shawnee territory. They didn’t like white men. They chased him several times before catching him. They didn’t kill him and he escaped. Then Daniel Boone led settlers to Boonesborough, Tennessee.

Everybody is on a road somewhere. The road you take will make the difference in your life. Whether to move to a different town or stay in your hometown, that road will lead you to your destiny. Yes, everyone has a destiny, a plan for their lives. Whether or not you chose to live that life will decide what happens to you. Before the end of your life, you can chose to change directions in your life. We can change the road we are on, if we have the courage to do so. Changing directions in your life isn’t always easy. It is simple, by not easy. Like in the Indiana Jones movie, the old Crusader, who guarded the Holy Grail, said, chose wisely, because one leads to life and the other leads to death.

Chose your choices wisely, because one leads to life and the other leads to death.

The Power of Words.

We learn to speak when we are young. We can’t wait to able to speak. Many times I have seen small children run around screaming with other children. They were not saying a word, but they were communicating with each other. It can get irritating because of the noise level. But communicating is a real need in our lives. We strive to be understood and become frustrated when we are not. Some people are chatter boxes, while some don’t say two word. Have you ever met someone that didn’t say anything, but you knew what he was saying anyway? It’s interesting how that works. We learn communication all of our lives. Yet, some things are a puzzle.

Words have power. Speaking must be done judiciously. We can encourage, discourage, up lift or destroy with our words. I heard this many years ago, but have found it to be true. You can’t take back hurtful words or reverse what you said. It is like taking a box of feathers to the top of a mountain, then releasing them. Then try to gather all of them back again. You can’t. Our words have a power of its own.

Using our words correctly takes self discipline. We have to learn to speak at the right time. Everybody knows the fable of the boy who cried wolf. In the end, no one believed a word he said. It is important that people can believe what you say. It is not only for your sake, but for others also. This is where using our word correctly comes into play. What if all your words come to pass, just as you have spoken them. I have heard many people say, that kills me or I can’t do that. Guess what, those words come to pass whether or not we want them to. It’s not that we can’t speak. It is speaking the truth and live that way. For as the mouth speaks, so are we.

What do you enjoy?

What is the most enjoyable thing that you can do? Enjoyable means having delight or pleasure in something that you do and when you think about it afterwards. What delights your heart? Is it a walk in the park? Or having a good meal? Maybe, it’s your grandchildren. Think about the most enjoyable time you have had in the past year. What do you see? Why am I asking about this particular subject. It is because what you think about or see with your mind is who you are.

Our lives are made up of everything that we have experienced through sight, sound, touch, smell and hearing. If you think it doesn’t matter what you experience, you are wrong. I am not saying that we don’t go into the world and learn who we are. I am saying that we need to be careful what we do. All the input into our hearts and minds develops our character as a human being. Did you ever wonder why a person who has lead a hard life looks so aged and weary of life. Their experiences have taken a toll on their being. We can think on good things without it being pie in the sky attitude. I like to watch the clouds that form for every different situation. I like watching and thinking about my children or grandchildren play. These situations are ever changing, but there is a constant to them.

There is nothing wrong with our senses being engaged with something good and thinking about them. There is so much that is wrong in this world. So, why dwell on these things. Look for the good in everything. And when you see, hear, feel, taste or smell it, it will be enjoyable to you.
