Assurance

The way the world is right now, everyone is trying to sell me insurance. Where they got my name and address is still a mystery. People I have never heard of are doing they level best to get me to buy insurance. It seems that I supposedly need insurance for everything. Folks, insurance is for only after the fact that something happens to you. Then it doesn’t cover everything. If the insurance company doesn’t want to pay, they don’t cover it. It is and always has been a poor replacement for assurance. Assurance isn’t based upon how much you pay or whether or not if someone is willing to pay. Assurance is based upon faith, trusting and believing. What do you trust in? What do you believe? Where do you put your faith? I always loved the stories of King David of Israel. Before David became king, he was King Saul’s general. He led the army of Israel into battle. God had promised David that one of his descendants would be the Messiah. David believed God and led the children of Israel into battle many times. He would run into the heaviest fighting and fought his way out. The people of Israel would sing songs about David’s exploits. This is assurance, trusting and believing.

Psalm 91: 9 “Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.”

Who are You, really?

I was reading in the Book of Matthew where Jesus was talking about the camel going through the eye of the needle. He was saying that unless a rich man puts down his earthy riches; he can’t enter the kingdom of God. The apostles where all amazed at what he said. Peter asked Jesus, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus answered saying, “with men it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” This is where I come in. God was showing me all the great men of God and their accomplishments. He began to tell me these were normal Christians. They did what was expected. That is a standard, the norm. They were normal Christians. Jesus said, “greater works shall you do because I go to my Father.” I am suppose to do greater works than Jesus and this is the standard. I looked at myself and saw that I didn’t even measure up to the standard. Who can be saved? Jesus said, “With men it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

The Weight of Reality

Years ago, I was attending church in Lafayette, La. There was a young man who was a quadriplegic. He could only get around in a wheel chair pushed by someone else. A young woman was helping him with his parents. I was invited to his house by the young women. She wanted me to meet him. He could not speak with his voice, but had developed a system with a pointer on his head to point to letters or words on a board. It was arduous and painstaking to carry on a conversation. But he enjoyed talking to people. We talked for about an hour. It was interesting because there was nothing wrong with his mind only his body. We talked about many things, especially things of the Lord. The last thing he said to me, was what bothered him the most. He said it was the constant drooling that he couldn’t control. I began to cry, because I saw my sin. He couldn’t use his body and nothing could stop me from using mine. Yet I would complain. He couldn’t speak, but I complained when I had to talk to people. He couldn’t walk and I would get tired walking around. He loved life and showed me the truth spirit of Christ in him.

Calling Good evil.

Do you remember 9/11? People were afraid. For almost 3 weeks the church in the US were filled with people. Then people weren’t afraid anymore and stopped going to church until the next disaster. Let count them. There has been a disaster every year affecting the US since 2000. It has slow but surely drained the monetary and human resources of the US. Now people look at disasters and go “Whatever!” Why is it that only personal disasters get our attention. Must someone died in your family before you will pay attention. We are to live our lives as if this day was our last. God never gave us tomorrow. What He does give us is now; today is the day of salvation; now is the time. Beyond that we have nothing. If God gives us 70 years of life, we are blessed. And I don’t care how good your money is or how good your doctors are. If it is your time to go, nothing will stop it. Look around and see what really is happening in this world. You will see people calling evil good and good evil.

Isa.5:18 “Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!
20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Have you ever been alone

Have you ever been alone in the middle of people, especially if the people are relatives? You try to tell someone what is going on and they look at you as if you speaking a foreign language. Or they laugh because you are not making any sense. I have had people get angry with me because they thought I was making fun of them. I want to be understood. I have something to say that is important. My needs are as important as anyone else. I think that so many people do not listen anymore. I can listen to a person and tell you who they are within 10 minutes of listening to them. Most people are unaware that they will tell you their life’s story within minutes. The secret is listening, not hearing. Listening is paying attention to a person and understanding as they talk about anything. I think sometimes it is a lost art.
Mt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Ecc 1:4-8 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth forever. The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

A friend of mine just died

A friend of mine just died. My wife and I met he and his wife when they moved to our town after hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in New Orleans. An older couple who decided not to rebuild their home in New Orleans. He was a hardworking man who did manual labor most of his life. He was fairly easy going, but could stand up for his rights when necessary. He and his wife came with us each time our sons were deployed to Iraq. They helped us with our work for the La. National Guard. They were parents and grandparents. He told me once he missed his home in New Orleans. One son lives in California. His daughter and family live here in town and another son lives in New Orleans. Most of their friends are gone. He was in his eighties. Now he is gone. What will people say about you when you are gone? What will be your legacy? Will anyone remember you? This little man made an impact on my life and my families. You know what was funny he wasn’t trying to do anything but to be a friend. To everything there is a season, a time to live and a time to die.

Music is of God.

I have been a music director for a local Christian radio station. I listened to all the music. Some music was good and some not so good. What I was listening for was the anointing of God. Most albums had 12 songs on it. The music companies wanted me to play their choice of music. As I searched for suitable music for the radio station, I would find one or two songs that had the anointing. Most of the time it wasn’t what the music company wanted. Sometimes I had go-rounds with their representatives. Our goals where different. What I was trying to accomplish was music that lifted people up to trust and believe God. Hope is a powerful thing. God is the author of music. The angels play music all the time. If they aren’t singing, they are playing music. It has a force all its own.  As with all of the things of God, there are two sides, faith and doubt. It is the same sword. It can be used both ways. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. With all the music the angels have, there is one song they can’t sing. It is the song of the redeemed. Only we can sing that song to the Lord and all the angels stop and listen.

Christmas season

It’s Christmas season again. Everybody is fighting to get a good deal at the stores. I saw on the news people literally fighting in the stores. Doesn’t it warm your heart and make you want Christmas to come around again. There are a multitude of Television program with the name Christmas on it. Not one of them even slightly resembles Christmas. I don’t like to be negative about anything. If you really want to get into the spirit of Christmas, you have to remember what it is about. Jesus came to give to mankind. He gave faith, hope and charity. People in his day had lost hope that God was going to help them. These gifts are intangible. You can’t touch them, taste them or feel them. But if you give these gifts to mankind, your heart will be full of the Christmas Season. Jesus is the reason for the season.

the hard place

Ever been in the hard place caught between the rock and a hard place. Where you went into a situation that you weren’t supposed to be in. In this place you did things you can never that back. Many soldiers find themselves in just hard place. They did their job and they will never be the same. You don’t have to be a soldier to find yourself there. What do you do? What can you do? God chose a particular person to spread the gospel to the gentiles. His name was Saul of Tarsus, the apostle Paul. Of all the people God could have chosen, he chose Paul. While he was Saul, he was chosen to capture or kill all the people who believed in the Way, Christians. Saul dragged them to prison, men, women and children. Some men he had killed. He did all this in the name of God. He did this until Jesus stopped him on the way to Damascus. His life changed and began following Jesus. At first the Christians didn’t believe he changed but eventually they saw it. There is only one way to go and one person to ask for help. His name is Jesus and to start just call on his name.

Striving

I have always tried to improve myself toward the goal of perfection. I seems that I always come up short. I get frustrated with the trying. Sometimes I throw up my arms and quit. I want to be like Jesus. The Bible says if we try and pursue the goal eventually we will become like Jesus. For we will see Him as he is and be like him. I am the image and likeness of God. God made us in His image. We are not perfect because we are still human. The flesh I live in wars against my spirit. The flesh wants to live its life on this earth. I can’t live the life of the flesh. Anyone who lives that life will destroy themselves. I want the love and approval of my Father. So I pick myself up and try again walking in His path. Eventually I will get there when my life is over on the earth. But all of this isn’t about being perfect. It is about living the life of Jesus on this earth.
