Responsibility…

Man has always tried to place the blame for their sins on somebody else. There is a whole industry based upon this very principle. It is my father’s fault, it is my mother’s fault or the fault belongs to someone else. Instead of saying, it’s me O Lord in need of help. There have been many books and moral plays that have address this very subject. It seems to be a recurring theme in literature. It is very simple because it is a recurring theme in everyday life.

It is a recurring theme in the bible. Adam blamed his wife for his sin. Cain tried to blame Abel for killing him. King David when the Prophet Daniel confronted him tried to play innocent for killing Uriah. When Abraham was faced by the Egyptian Pharoah said Sarah was his sister not to be killed. Issac did the same thing. Joseph’s brother, when they sold him into slavery, lied to their father. Moses struck the rock twice and then blamed the Israelites for making him angry. The Israelites blamed everything but themselves for not serving God. King Saul blamed his men for not killing everyone and everything in Amalek. There is a whole book dedicated to this very subject, the book of Jonah.

When Jesus began to preach in Israel, this was the very subject that He preached, that we are responsible for ourselves. The Pharisees didn’t like this. They plotted to kill Him because the people saw the truth. If you read the narratives about their decision to kill Jesus was about this subject. They knew the truth and didn’t want to face it.

Being responsible for yourself is the only that you can come to God and to serve Him. There is no other way that you can be right with God. In Philippians 2:12 it says, “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”
