The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Matt.21:1-9;
Mark 11:1-10; Luke 19:29-44; John 12:12-19; Zech.9:9. Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your king is coming to you, he is just and endowed with salvation, humbled and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem to fulfill prophesy. He was proclaimed King of the Jews, the Son of David, the Messiah. The people were waving palm branches in front of Jesus. Ps.92:12 (kingship).
Palm – stately, majestic, grows straight, life in the heart, masters all circumstances, symbol of victory, nourished by hidden springs, benevolent to mankind (food, shelter, oil, shade), evergreen, bears in old age. Lev.23:40 (on the walls of the temple).
The people came out and met Jesus at the Mount of Olives, and he rode in through the Gate Beautiful. Ezekiel 44:1-3 “And the Lord said to me, This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened and no one shall enter it, for the Lord God of Israel had entered by it; therefore it shall be shut.” Luke 19:39-40 “And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”
