Jesus set His face.

Jesus withdrew from Jerusalem to Bethany, discourse about Herod. Luke 13:22-35.
In Perea, Jesus gave the discourse at the Pharisees table. Luke 14:1-24.
The parable of the ‘Lost Coin’. Luke 15:8-10.

2 parables on ‘Stewardship’. Luke 16:1-31.

In Bethany, Lazarus was raised from the dead. John 11:1-46.
According to Jewish custom, they believed that a man could be raised from the dead up to 3 days after his death. On the 4th day his spirit departed. Lazarus was raised from the dead on the 4th day. Again showing the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
When Jesus wept and was troubled in his spirit, he was not grieving over Lazarus. He was grieving over the unbelief in the people.
In Perea, Jesus cleansed 10 lepers. This was another sign of the Messiah.
Luke 17:11-19.
The discourse on the ‘Coming of the Kingdom’. Luke17:22-37.
2 parables on ‘Prayer’. Luke 18:1-14.
Jesus and the little children. Luke 18:15-17.
Rich young ruler. Luke 18:18-30.
Jesus said, “It was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” The eye of the needle was the small gate on the side of the large gate. The camel had to be unloaded to get through the gate. So it is with a rich man.
As Jesus walked toward Jerusalem, he healed a blind man.
Luke 18:34-43, Mark 10:46-52.
Conversion of Zaccheus. Luke 19:1-10.

Near Jerusalem, Jesus taught 2 parables, on ‘Money usage’ and on the ‘Kingdom of God’. Luke 19:11-28.
Jesus said, ‘I tell you, that to everyone who has shall more be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.’

God has visited.

In Luke 7:16, the scripture says “God has visited his people”. One thing the Jews did wrong, was to miss the time of God’s visitation and were expelled from the land of Israel. Luke 19:44.
Herod Antipas had John the Baptist arrested and imprisoned, because John preached against Herod’s marriage to his brother Philip’s wife. While in prison, John sent his disciples to Jesus to ask him if he was the one to come. Jesus showed John through his words and deeds. Matt.11:2-19; Luke 7:18-35.
In Capernaum, Jesus performed the 2nd sign of being the Messiah, casting out a deaf and dumb spirit. The religious leaders said that Jesus cast out devils by the devil. They blasphemed the Holy Ghost. Matt.12:22-29; Mark 3:20-30; Luke 11:14-23.
The religious leaders were seeking a sign, because of their unbelief. Jesus’ mother and brothers were looking for him in the synagogue. Jesus had 4 brothers and some sisters. Joseph and Mary had other children, because it was a curse not to have many children (James-Gal.1:19, Jude-the Epistle, Joses, Simon). Parables- Sower, Seed, Tares, Mustard Seed, Leaven, Treasure, Pearl, Dragnet and Lamp. Matt.12:38-50; 13:1-56; Mark 3:31-35; 4:1-34; Luke 8:4-21; Joel 3:13.
On the Sea of Galilee, Jesus stills the sea. Jesus the man rebuked the storm. He asked why the disciples didn’t rebuke the wind and sea. God has given man dominion over the earth. Jesus and the disciples crossed over the sea to the town of Gadarene. There Jesus heals a demoniac, Jarius’ daughter raised from the dead, woman with issue of blood healed and blind men healed. Matt.8:23-34; 9:18-31; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25.
As they crossed back over the sea, Jesus cast out a dumb spirit. The Religious leaders, knowing who Jesus was by the miracle performed, blasphemed the Holy Ghost, saying Jesus used the devil to cast out the devil. Matt.9:32-34.
The 12 disciples were sent out and taught them the meaning of discipleship. Matt.9:35-11:1.
Herod Antipas beheads John the Baptist, the 12 return, the feeding of 5000, Jesus walks on the water, discourse on the Bread of Life and the traditions of men. Mark 6:14-29; John 6:1-14; Mark 6:45-52; Matt.14:22-36; John 6:26-40; Matt.15:1-14.
The Scribes and Rabbi’s interpreted the Torah(Pentateuch). This interpretation is called the Misnah. The Misnah was interpreted and this book is called the Talmud. These are the books studied to become a Rabbi.

Around Galilee.

In Capernaum – Jesus came to the earth to do specific things, one was to set up the church and place leaders (shepherds) over it. He chose 12 of his disciples (talmidim) as apostles (emissaries), including Judas Iscarot, that all scripture be fulfilled (not thy will but thine). As the example, Jesus is the model of our life. He always would shun publicity, never wanting to glorify himself, but only the God the Father. Jesus became our Messiah, through his death, burial and resurrection. Then God the Father exalted him to become Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16; Phil.2:8,9.
Near the Sea of Galilee, Jesus went up on the mountain and began to teach the Sermon on the Mount, the practical day by day way of living. Most Jews had to work and didn’t have the opportunity to study the scriptures. They would go to the synagogue on the Sabbath day for instruction in the Word of God. Very few Jews owned a bible. Matt.5:1; Luke 6:20-49.
In Capernaum, Jesus was called to preach the kingdom of God to the Jews (Mark 7:22) and he looked for faith among his brethren, because it was rare. A roman centurion, a gentile, a dog in the eyes of the Jews, came to Jesus asking him to heal a servant. This man believed Jesus unconditionally because he knew and understood the authority in Jesus. Jesus marveled (to wonder, to admire) at his faith, and said all didn’t have that kind of faith. And the Jews had the Word of God. Matt.8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10; Rom.10:17; Isa.49:12,13.
In Nain, Jesus raises a widow’s son from the dead. When the widow’s son died, she lost everything. Only a man could own or inherit the property (Kinsman Redeemer). A man was to inherit for the woman, Jesus for his bride. Luke 7:11-17; Job 19:25.

In Capernaum.

This series of blogs is the life of Jesus in chronological order.

In Capernaum, Jesus healed a demoniac on the Sabbath day and healed Peter’s mother. Matt.4:14-17; Isa.53:4. When preaching in Galilee, Jesus cleansed a leper. This miracle had not been performed in Israel since Elijah prayed for Naaman the Syrian and not for an Israelite since Moses. Jesus had already spoken to Nicodemas and the religious leaders knew that Jesus was of God. The religious leaders enjoyed great wealth and power and like Herod weren’t easily persuaded to give up all for God. This miracle marked the beginning of the end for the religious leaders and they knew it. Matt.8:1-5; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16;
Lev.13:49; 14:2f.; Luke 4:27.
In Capernaum, Jesus began to reveal himself as Messiah. He healed a paralytic and forgave him his sins. Only God can forgive sins. Matt.9:1-8; Mark 2:1-13; Luke 5:17:26; Ps.32:5; Isa.43:25.
Jesus and his disciples went to Jerusalem for the Passover. On the way back, they passed through a grain field and picked grain to eat and healed a man on the Sabbath day. The religious leaders began disputing with him about his actions on the Sabbath day. The Sabbath was instiuted by God to honor him. To honor God, one must do his will. To do God’s will is to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8.
For the letter of the Law kills, but the Spirit gives life. Again the religious leaders see their kingdom falling and want to kill Jesus. Matt.12:1-21; Mark 2:23-28; 3:1-6; Luke 6:1-11; Deut.5:14; 2 Cor.3:6.

Galilean Ministry.

Jesus always entered into a synagogue on the Sabbath day. There he would read and teach from the scriptures. Jesus was a rabbi. Today, the reading schedule in the synagogues have a 1 year cycle. During the second Temple period, the reading schedule was much longer, approximately 3 1/2 years. The correlation of the of the reading schedule and Jesus’ ministry is not happenstance. As Jesus would teach the scriptures in the synagogues, he would go into the streets and perform the Word of God. Jesus said it himself, he came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, for the Word of God is in thought, word, and deed.
Jesus had lived in Nazareth, one Sabbath he went in to the synagogue. The scribes asked him to read. He read from Isaiah 61:1,2 and then taught the people. Jesus said that this scripture was fulfilled in their sight. At this time every man was looking for the Messiah, Jesus told them plainly who he was. They rejected Him, through their unbelief. He left Nazareth and went to Capernaum, and made it his home, to fulfill the Word of God. Matt.4:13-16; Isa.9:1,2.
As Jesus walked through the countryside by the Sea of Galilee, He began his ministry. Calling his disciples, teaching, healing and meeting all the needs of the people. As He walked he did the Will of God. Matt.4:18-25; Mark 1:14-20; Luke 5:1-11.

Herod Antipas rules in Jerusalem.

Herod Antipas and his adulterous wife got very tired of John the Baptist calling them adulterers in public. They decided to imprison John. Herod knew that the people regarded John as a prophet, so he was careful not to harm him.
John, like any other God-fearing, Bible believing Jew, was looking for the kingdom of God. Not seeing it physically established, he sent one of his disciples to Jesus to ask him why not. Jesus said, “Tell John what you see and hear, that the kingdom of God is being established in the hearts and minds of the people.”
During one of Herod’s palace parties, his step-daughter, Salome danced for him. He liked it so much, that he offered her anything up to half of his kingdom. Herod’s wife told her to ask for John’s head on a platter. Reluctantly, Herod agreed.
Jesus stayed in Judea until the first rains. He then went home to Galilee. On his way home, he took a detour straight through Samaria. To us it doesn’t seem unusual, but to a Jew it was next to blasphemy. the Jews considered the Samaritans, dogs or outcast pagans. The attitude the Jews had toward the Samaritans is not an uncommon one amongst God fearing Bible believing people. John 2.

Jesus in Jerusalem.

On the opposite side of Jerusalem is the Valley of Hinnon. It is just the opposite of the Mount of Olives. This is where the children of Israel built altars to Baal and high places to every idol. It is also where Golgatha is located. No wonder, this valley is called in Hebrew, Gehenna (hell).(Rev.19,20).
God is not unrighteous toward any man. In the Law, God provided for every family to be able to sacrifice an offering at the Temple. If you couldn’t afford a lamb or goat, you could offer turtle doves, as did Joseph and Mary.
At this time the Sadducees were in power as the priests and High Priests. They were in the ministry for the money and power. The Sadducees had set up, inside the Temple walls, their bankers, money changers, dove and lamb sellers and any other merchant that would go with each appropriate feast.
Jesus and his disciples walked down from the Mt. of Olives to the Temple. As they entered into the courtyard, there were the Sadducees’ people selling merchandise. Jesus became angered by this abomination. He pick up a 3 fold cord, not easily broken, and begins to chase these thieves out of his Father’s house. Then the Sadducees asked Jesus by what authority do you do this.?
After Jesus stood up to the Sadducees in the temple, a chief Rabbi, Rav Nicodemas came to Jesus to question him. For a man to be a rabbi, he literally had to memorize the bible. Nicodemas and the true religious leaders knew that a Messiah was coming and the time was right for Him.
So Nicodemas came to question Jesus about this very thing. There on the Mt. of Olives, one evening Nicodemas asked Jesus, “Are you the one, or are we to look for another?” Jesus began to explain how a man can enter the kingdom of God. He literally answered all of Nicodemas’ questions and from that point, he believed. John 2.
