The Church: the story of John Mark.

In the garden of gethsemane when Jesus was praying, the soldiers of the high priest came to get Him. There was a young man with the 12 apostles. His name was John Mark, the gospel of Mark. When the soldiers took Jesus, they tried to took all of the disciples. But everyone ran away. The soldiers grab John Mark’s clothes, but he slip out them and ran away.

The council in Jerusalem was about 50 AD. In chapter 15 of Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Barnabas separated over a young disciple, John Mark. John had gone with Paul and Barnabas on the first missionary journey, but departed because it was too hard for him to stay. Paul didn’t want him back. A fight ensued and Paul and Barnabas separated. Barnabas took Mark and went to Cyprus and Paul and Silas went to Asia Minor.

The Church working it out.

Paul was at Antioch. The people responded to the gospel. So much so, that the saints in Jerusalem wanted to see for themselves. Peter had been there. He living among the gentiles and didn’t exactly follow the dietary laws as a Jew. When the saints arrived from Jerusalem, Peter then separated himself from the gentiles. Paul saw this and called him a hypocrite. It started a fight in the church. Were the new believers to follow the law of Moses? The church at Jerusalem did. Paul said no. They are gentiles aren’t required to follow them. The dispute couldn’t be resolved in Antioch. The leaders of the church had to come together. So, Paul, Barnabus, Peter and the rest of the saints from Jerusalem went there. As they assembled, they began to pray and seek God. God told them that the gentiles aren’t required to follow the law of Moses. They are required to follow the covenant of Noah. This was a covenant given to all of mankind. So, the church came to an agreement. The followers of the covenant of Noah are called the followers of the way, the truth and the life.

The First Church council.

Paul and Barnabus went on a missionary trip. They went to Asia Minor. When they returned to Antioch, believers from Jerusalem came to see the work. While there, they started saying that the new converts needed to be circumcised and follow the law of Moses. Paul disputed it with them. He said that they weren’t Jews and only needed to follow the covenant of Noah or the way. This brought on the first church council in Jerusalem. All the leaders of the church gathered in Jerusalem. It was decided that the new converts only needed to follow the covenant of Noah and become the followers of the way, the truth and the life.

The Church growing.

God never design the church to be just in Israel. The plan has always been to be a light to the world. So that the world would believe. God had to disperse the church through persecution. The apostles and believers spread out into the world to preach the gospel. One of the most unusual things that God did was to convert the church’s arch enemy, Saul of Tarsus. And God made Paul one of the leading apostles.

The Church dispersed.

God brought Jesus to the Jews first because His promises He made to them. But it wasn’t to end there. God wants the whole world to come home. So the believers in Jerusalem had to be dispersed into the world. Then the gospel would be preached everywhere. Thomas went to India. James the greater went to Spain. Paul went to Asia Minor and everybody else in between.

The Acts of the Apostles: Founding the Church.

These series of blogs are on the New Testament, the part of the bible written about the promise of God, Jesus. The gospels were written by subject matter. I put them in chronological order. Now it’s the Acts of the Apostles. The book of Acts is in chronological order. What I did was to place the Apostles where they were and when the Epistles were written. My dates are approximate. After Jesus rose from the dead, He stayed on earth for about 40 days or the day of Pentecost. Jesus set the church in order and told them what to expect.

The New Testament and The Book of Acts in Chronological order:
Ch.1-8:1a The Birth of the Church in Jerusalem.
Ch.1:1-5 The forty days.
Ch.1:6-11 The ascension of Jesus.
Ch.1:12-14 The Upper Room.

Time: 30 AD. The Founding of the Church.

Ch.1:15-25 A twelfth apostle is chosen.
Ch.2:1-13 Pentecost: the coming of the Holy Ghost.
Ch.2:14-25 Peter’s sermon. Fulfillment of prophesy. Resurrection of Jesus.
Ch.2:37-47 The New-born church.

The Closing Events: Forty day of Confirmation.

Jesus rose from the dead. Matt.28:1-15; Mark16:1-8;
Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-18.

On the first day of the week, there was an earthquake, and an angel rolled the stone away from the tomb. The Romans fell on their faces as dead men. The women, who traveled with Jesus, came that morning to finish the burial. They saw the stone rolled away and Jesus was not in the tomb. 2 angels told them that Jesus had risen from the dead and to go tell the disciples and Peter. Peter, John and Mary ran back to the tomb. John looked in , but Peter went in. John believed, but not Peter. Mary stayed behind, when they left. Then Jesus appeared to Mary. Some of the guards went to the chief priest and told them what happened. The elders and chief priest paid off the Roman guards to say that the disciples stole his body.

Jesus appeared to his disciples. Mark 16:9-13; Luke 24:13-43;
John 20:11-21:25.
Jesus appeared 3 different times to his disciples in Jerusalem and Galilee.

The Commission and Ascension - Matt.28:16-20; Mark 16:14-20;
Luke 24:44-53. Mark 16:15-18 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

Jesus gave them the great commission to preach the gospel to the world. After he had given them these instructions, Jesus ascended into heaven.

The Closing Events: the Crucifixion.

Crucifixion – Matt.27:33-56,66; Mark 15:22-41,47; Luke 23:26-49,56, John 19:16-37.
Jesus was led to Golgotha, to be crucified. Simon of Cyrene carried the cross for Jesus. Jesus spoke the women weeping for him. He told them to weep for the people of Jerusalem. The Romans brought him to the place of the skull (Golgotha). There they stripped him and nailed him to the tree. Placing a scroll above his head, written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, saying that Jesus was the King of the Jews. On each side of Jesus, 2 thieves were also crucified. One asked for forgiveness and the other cursed God. The Romans cast lots for Jesus’ garment (prayer shawl). From the 6th hour until the 9th, the earth was in darkness. This is when Jesus cried out to God, “why have you forsaken me”. God couldn’t look on sin and Jesus became the sin offering. Jesus gave up the Spirit at the 9th hour of the day. This is the time of the evening sacrifice in the temple. The veil separating the inner court from the Holy of Holies was split in two. Joseph of Arimathea with Nicodemas, received permission from Pilate to bury Jesus. With myrrh and aloes, they prepared and buried Jesus.

The Closing Events: Before Pilate.

The scepter was the right of the Jewish leaders to put to death, anyone transgressing the Law of Moses. This was taken away by the Roman government. The Sanhedren had to take Jesus to Pontius Pilate to crucify him.

Peter’s denial - Matt.26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:25-27.
Peter and John entered into the courtyard of the high priest. Peter was sitting outside, people began questioning him. Saying he was a follower of Jesus. Peter denied it 3 times, then the cock crowed and Jesus looked at Peter. He ran out weeping bitterly.

Suicide of Judas. Matt.27:3-10; Acts 1:18,19.
Matt.26:21 - one of you will betray me.
Matt.26:24 - woe to the man by which the Son of Man is betrayed.
Psalms 41:9
John 13:18 - He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel again me.
John 17:12 - not one of them perished but the son of perdition.
Psalms 109:6-8 - appoint a wicked man over him, and let an accuser stand at his right hand, when he is judged, let him come forth guilty; and let his days be few, let another take his office.
Judas could find no repentance in his heart. He felt guilty and condemned. So much that he hung himself.

Jesus before Pilate - Matt.27:11-32; Mark 15:1-19; Luke23:1-25;
John 18:28-19:16; Deut.21:6-9.
Pilate questioned Jesus, then sent him to Herod. Herod finished questioning him and sent him back to Pilate. As Pilate questioned Jesus, he couldn’t find any guilt in him (a perfect sacrifice). Pilate’s wife had a dream saying don’t have anything to do with judging Jesus. Pilate found out that Jesus was a king and also that he was the Son of God.
John 18:36; 19:7-12. Pilate tried to get Jesus released, but the crowds wanted Barabas released and Jesus crucified. Finally, Pilate agreed to crucify Jesus. Then he had Jesus scourged by the Romans and led away to Golgotha.
Deut.21:6-9 - The law provided for people to declare their innocence in the slaying of a man, by washing their hands in the sight of the priest and declaring their innocence.
